Day 58: Scrapbook Abe

My Mom loves to scrapbook. Sometime this summer we are going on a Lincoln adventure so I needed to make a cover page for our vacation. Thanks to my momma for keeping me company while I worked on this and we made catty comments about the dresses worn on the Academy Awards.

Day 57: Coffee Cup Quote Abe

Back to the grind of life in Vegas. I had school this morning and a double shift. Everyday I'm hustling.

Today is going by especially slow because my best friend Larissa is moving home and her plane comes in at 8 tonight. We haven't lived in the same city for 5 years! I could explode from joy right now, my darling is coming home!

Johnny, my bartender at work tonight, gave me an amazing Abe he found while at the Hard Rock Casino so I brought him coffee with an Abe quote!

Day 56: Abe Goes to Venice Beach

Eben & I wandered around Venice Beach before getting stuck for eight hours in horrendous Los Angeles traffic. For that reason alone I absolutely cannot move to California. On top of all that it was raining! However, we did eat like kings at the Fig Tree Beach Cafe and I made an Abe in the sand.

Day 55: Abeanautalis

I went to the Fake Four Fest tonight! To say the least I had my mind blown by all the performers. I saw Ion Mike, Ceschi, Astronautalis and Sole. Those are just the people I remember off the top of my head, there were at least 10 groups. One of my favorite moments was a song Ceschi and Astronautalis did together. If I get clearance I will post the video of it later. Since I was out all night and the only thing I have on me is my phone, I found an app that let me Abe out a picture I took of that magical moment between Ceschi and Andy. Not my best Abe, but it will just have to do under the circumstances!

I also got to meet the man, the myth, lady killer himself: Mr. Astronautalis.

These are a few of the highlights from the amazing Astronautalis set, complete with my fat head.
ENJOY!

Day 54: Blue Abe

If you've ever read the letters between Joshua Speed and Lincoln you will know what true sadness is and then you learn how to cure it. Because the both were so desperately sad, they were good at coaching each other out of it.  I think a lot of why people believe that Lincoln was gay has to do with these letters and his relationship with Speed. There's a whole book in there that someone needs to write, maybe one of my talented writer friends?

The sadness is one of the reasons I love Abe so much. He wasn't perfect, he was a man. Sadness tends to lead to great comedy and Lincoln was huge on laughter.

My friend Erik is so great with the Abe helping, even from across the country! He did this drawing and I have to say, it's bitchin. Thank you!

I love the eyes and the cheekbones. Great beard, and you didn't even need the hat. Perfect!

I'm so excited for the Fake Four Fest tomorrow in Los Angeles. I get to see some of my favorite performers including Ceschi and Astronautalis. Hopefully, I can do some crazy Abe at the show there... maybe that bathroom needs some art. Anyway, check out their videos!

Day 53: Minty Fresh Abe

Lately, I've been experimenting making mojitos for friends. I usually make the party sangria, but I love the idea of blackberries and mint hanging out all solo style with too much sweetness from the sugar.  One thing I don't like though, is rum.  So, what does a person do that marinates her own flavors of vodka? Makes an effing mint one, so now everyone will get vodka mojitos and I bet they'll never even know the difference.

Also, my friend from New York turned me on to this amazing performance of a man singing Abraham Lincoln's Letters.  This is one of the coolest Lincoln related things I have ever seen.

Day 52: The Abe Goes Bananas!

I listened to This American Life all day. Do you have any idea what that does to a person? I'm going off the deep end so I decided to take Abe along with me. If I'm bananas, well then so is he!

Day 51: Face de Candy Abe

Eben and I watched movies all day. It was so nice. Then I met my friend Phil up for some work and tasty Thai treats. Spicy Papaya Salad is really where it's at. While watching all those movies had to make an Abe out of our copious amounts of candy.

Day 50: Abe Pennies

Going to Pez's BBQ later, can't wait. Also I've been moving all day so I'm using an Abe my momma gave me, a collection of the commemorative Abe pennies.

Day 49: Abe & I Go to the Library

Amen! I slept for ten hours today. I so needed to catch up. It was a lovely day.  I went and got some breakfast, or late lunch if you're on a normal sleep schedule and headed over to the library. There are few things I enjoy more in this life then searching through the library's CD collection.  I laugh hysterically when I find things I know I need, or just heard about.  It's like when you're on a trip to California and you win at the scratch lottery tickets.  Boom! In your face! Pure unadulterated joy.  The amazing finds of the day were the audio to The Band's Last Waltz, a tribute to Bruce Springsteen, two Bjork CDs I'm missing, and an Uncle Tupelo.  All in all I checked out 34 CDs...mwhahahaha. To commemorate the day I made an Abe out of all them.

Day 48: Abe At the Yardhouse

Catching up with a friend over tasty treats at the Yardhouse. It's been such a long day. I was up late writing a paper about the gangster as a tragic hero so I only got three hours of sleep and somehow slept through my alarm for class. Luckily, my teacher was tardier than I was, so that worked out. After that I went to work on one my weird side projects to hustle and make cash money. After working for five hours, I received a text to cover my little lady bug's shift, Ms. Megan needs a night off every now and then. The girl bends over backwards for me so I headed to the Winch. I should have made Johnny help me make an Abe, but it was pretty busy for some reason.  Luckily, I always have a sharpie on me and I made this little guy on my coaster.

Day 47: I Love Abe

I can't be the only one with a poster of all the Presidents of the United States on their door to their bedroom. I just can't. I'm writing a paper and damn near forgot about Abe when I remembered he's on my door and I haven't adorned him all highschool yearbook style.

Day 46: My Dream Abe Project

I collect frames of all sizes and colors. My dream Abe Project would be to have a wall in my house devoted just to Abe and all his glory. Little frames, big frames, gaudy ones, plain ones, frilly ones, scary ones, you get the idea. What I like about this particular project is that on days when I have a ton of homework, worked a double and had school, I can get this Abe done in 5 minutes. I have the frames, the only time I spend is finding a new photograph of Abe and honestly that is my most favorite activity to do to wind down a day.
I love this crazy neon green frame, it's my favorite one I currently have in my stash. It's so cute trying to be all Victorian but failing in the most adorable way possible.

Day 45: Clementine's Abe

Random thoughts for Valentine's Day 2004: Today is a day invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap. I took a train out to Montauk, I'm not an impulsive person.
Yeah, I might be obsessed with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but whatever it's my favorite movie. I've seen it more times than I wish to share with anyone, except maybe my friend Garett who also has a weakness to this movie that almost rivals my own. To give you an idea of how bad I am, I watched it three times today, but I did start at midnight. The movie just makes me feel better about life. In honor of Valentine's Day and Clementine Kruczynski I made this here potato head Abe.

This is my favorite Abe I have ever done.

Meet Me in Montauk, Abe.

Day 44: Abe Dresser

Sometimes Abes are going to have to coincide with my other projects. Today I was painting my great grandmother's furniture I inherited from her. My Great Grandma Chris is probably the leading influence in my life. She was super into constant education, the occult, and meatball sandwiches. I'm not as into the occult stuff anymore, but I have an appreciation for all things weird which is probably what she wanted. I'm always reading a few books and I have a serious problem with meatball sandwiches.  I can see the mark she left on me in many of my favorite things.
I didn't want to compromise the integrity of the dresser or change it too much so I painted the hardware my favorite color, electric blue. I also needed to Abe it up so I spray painted another Lincoln stencil inside. Now it's perfect.

Day 43: Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration

I have the weirdest family on the planet and I adore them immensely. Of course we would be in insanity overdrive for Abraham Lincoln's 202nd Birthday.

The day started with Abe's favorite breakfast of bacon and eggs. Wise choice, Abraham.

Family Full of (b)Abes

Next, my mom, Nicole, and I started in on making Abe's favorite cake, Mary Todd Lincoln's Vanilla Almond Cake. Apparently this is the cake that Mary used while courting Abe. Food is definitely the way to a man's
heart.
Making Cake From Scratch

The cake was amazing! I can see why Abraham looked over Mary's obvious insanity and married her anyway. Woman makes a great cake.

Vanilla Almond Cake

We caught up on a few documentaries about Abe, the babe. This one on the history channel was wicked awesome. I've done a ton of Abe research, but they covered things I had never heard about. Did you know that Abe thought he contracted syphilis from a prostitute that he didn't pay? Hahahaha! Hilarious! Also, Gore Vidal is my new favorite historian. His bits in this show were the best, he made me cry when he started crying while he talked about the assassination.  It's three hours long, but so worth every minute.

We had to make Lincoln's favorite dinner. That is a old school dish called Chicken Fricassee. I don't know why it went out of style because this is awesome. I'm going to cook it once a week so that if I ever can time travel, I can impress him with my mad Fricassee skills. Let me dream.

Chicken! Fricassee! Yes!

It was such a wonderful day for my family and I. We all got to indulge our Lincoln fascination while enjoying each other's company.  We ate like kings! My Abe for today, besides devoting my entire day to him, were all the hats and beards that my Mom and I worked on in preparation for the party.

Day 42: Log Cabins With Ms. Penrod's 2nd Grade Class!

Today was such a special day! My friend Ms. Penrod invited me to her 2nd grade class to share my enthusiasm about Abraham Lincoln and have the opportunity to do an activity with the kids. Ms. Penrod's Mom read the Gettysburg Address to the children, in complete character wearing a stove pipe hat and beard! Next, the class gathered around and we read an amazing book called Honest Abe by Edith Kunhardt. I loved the illustrations in this book, and it breaks down some complicated Lincoln issues into terms that children can understand.  After the book, I showed the kids how to make log cabins, like the one Lincoln grew up in, out of pretzels and peanut butter. Ms. Penrod's class was a delight and they did amazingly well with this activity. Thank you again!

Day 41: Bathroom Signage Abe

I bought this plain bathroom sign guy at my local craft store for a dollar. In case you haven't noticed, I have a really hard time, almost an OCD about craft supplies that are so cheap. I see it, and I think....I could use that sometime, somewhere. Okay, I'm a hoarder of craft stuff. At least I know I have a problem. This guy's beard is made out of faux fur from all the Abe beards my Mom and I have been working on for Abraham Lincoln's birthday which is this Saturday, February 12.

Day 40: Salty Death Valley Abe

I can't believe I've been living in Nevada for almost twenty years of my life and I've never visited Death Valley.  My Dad and I took some time today to go on an adventure to this epic desert and see the lowest point in North America.  I made this Abe at the lowest spot in Death Valley, Badwater Basin, which sits 282 feet below sea level.

Here is an image of the final product.

Day 39: Zombie Abe Screenprint

So. Irritated. Right. Now.
Going hiking with my Dad tomorrow. Hopefully there will be a special Abe Death Valley edition for the occasion.

Day 38: Abe & Friends

I am really lucky in life to have the amazing friends that I do. When I came into work today, I had two Abe surprises waiting for me made by the great Kate! Also I've been meaning to sit down in front of a real flesh and blood computer, so that I might post a link to my friend Adi's blog, where he wrote me the most magical and uplifting Abe story I could ever ask for. Also, if you haven't bought your copy of Adi's book Somewhere Over the Sun you should. Like now would be great.

Day 37: The ABC Abe

This is a little warm-up of an activity I'm going to be doing with my friend Jessica and her 2nd grade class. We are going to make an ABC book about Abe's life and have the kids illustrate it for us. I'm so excited! Here's the outline

Finally finished with all the coasters. Two quotes and two pictures. Here is the final installment.

Day 35: Flower Child Abe

I've been so sick this week, no bueno. I bought this flower because it was pretty, a dollar, and my favorite color. I put a little Abe in the middle. Now, it's perfect.

Day 34: Emo Abe

I might be having a horrible week. I'm going to go to bed where I'm going to try and not think about it. Sorry this is so Emo, but it's all I can muster in the creativity department. At least I'm not giving up.

Day 33: Abe Heart

My heart is with Abe. Now I have a sweet piece of bling to prove it.

Day 32: Abe Coaster Part 3

This is my favorite close-up of Lincoln. I love it because you can see every nook and cranny in his wrinkles. He looks like a weathered cowboy from a Western.
